One of the most important things that you can do as a student of literature and fiction is to understand the literary devices, or conventions that make a book's plot and characters possible. This is an especially important skill for those who are just getting into writing fiction since it helps to develop their understanding of how stories, particularly fictional stories, actually work. Here are some examples of these literary devices:

- Characters. In most cases, people think of characters in the same way that they think of words in a sentence. If you were to read a story about two young women who loved each other deeply and dreamed of someday having children together, you would probably think of a typical protagonist and heroine. But when you read a book about these two women and their relationship, you will see that they have a myriad of supporting characters, all of which have varying degrees of importance, like the two people in-between the two lovers.

The Job of a Literary Critic Setting. You might think that characters in literature and fiction exist only in the minds of the readers, but in truth, these characters are actually part of the author's point of view. In order for a story to be successful, the author has to create a setting and circumstances that allow him or her to build up the plot and characters. This is usually done through the use of the main character and the secondary characters.

- Plot. Another word that is commonly used in literature and fiction is plot. A plot is essentially the central theme of a story, whether it's a novel, screenplay or short story, and it is a means of structuring the actions of the characters and the events that happen in the story, in order to build up the main character and the plot, and eventually the main theme of the story.

- Conflict. If there is conflict in the story, it is usually a sign that the writer is trying to create tension or conflict between the various characters in the story. Contrariwise, if the conflict is not dealt with effectively, this may also represent a failure of the writer on his or her part because he or she was not able to build up the story's storyboard.

It is very important to understand these literary devices because they allow the writer to make the characters and plots more believable to readers, thereby increasing the chances of readers becoming fans of the author. and buying the books that he or she has written.
