SIM lock:

A simlock, NETWORK-LOCK, CARRIER-LOCK, imei lock or (Master) subsidy lock is actually a technical limit built into GSM and CDMA cellphones by manufacturers for use by service providers to limit the usage of these phones to specific locations and/or networks. This is contrary to a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM restrictions.

Unlocking Technology:

Commonly, a locked handset will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, asking for the unlock code. On new phone models working on Google android software, the smartphone will show a message saying “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones will display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Several other handsets may well display assorted messages such as "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some instances the device will simply show a message stating it's locked. As soon as a valid code is typed in, the phone displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

The reason to unlock a phone is going to be able to use it with an alternative SIM card. Customers might want to continue using their smartphone but with a different provider or when traveling overseas they may want to connect to a foreign network by using a pre-paid subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Several organizations provide a IMEI cell phone unlocking service . This service calls for those people who need to unlock a handset to give their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also require the country and service provider the device is locked to, frequently sent by email or submitted on their website.
