The Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition were the two Minecraft versions available to download on PC. The situation is expected to change on June 7 however when both versions will be sold together on PCs.

You may be wondering what this means for you. In essence, it's an incremental change. A single purchase will include both versions of Minecraft in one package. This means there's only one vanilla Minecraft version available on Windows. If you already own Bedrock or Java edition then there's no reason to worry. Mojang says that all players that have either Java Edition or Bedrock Edition will receive the edition they do not currently own for free, right in the Minecraft Launcher. However, it could take up to three working days to show up.

Heading into the future, Jave and Bedrock will be distinct games with their own features. There are no new features. Only Servers is that you will receive both versions as standard when you buy Minecraft for Windows. Both versions are within the same launcher.

Java is available only for PC, Mac, and Linux systems. The Bedrock Edition is also available on PC, Android, iOS, Windows 10 Mobile, and a variety of consoles, including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and so forth. Java is considered to be the most flexible version of Minecraft on PC in terms of modding, though that version doesn't support cross-platform play. Additionally, the Java Edition has a higher performance threshold and tends appear a bit better on higher-end gaming PCs and the Bedrock Edition is designed to play more smoothly and has shorter load times.
