SIM lock:

A sim lock, Network-Lock, CARRIER LOCK, imei lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical limitation built into CDMA and GSM mobiles by producers to be used by carrier networks to restrict using these phones to specific countries and/or networks. This is in comparison with a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't enforce any SIM limitations.SIM locking is extremely common if subsidized handsets are sold with pre pay contracts. You should to note, however, that the technology associated with the mobile phone will need to be compatible with the system being employed by the network carrier. A GSM mobile phone will only operate with a GSM carrier and are not going to work on a CDMA service. Similarly, a CDMA cellphone can only work with a CDMA network and will not function on a GSM service. Keep in mind that more recent (2013 and newer) high end mobile phones are equipped to support both CDMA and GSM technologies, enabling users to utilize their mobile devices on any network.

Unlocking Technology:

Frequently, a locked mobile phone will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, asking for the unlock code. On modern phone models operating on Google android software, the cell phone will display a message saying “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it's network locked. Windows phones will display the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Several other models may well show alternative messages as in "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some cases the handset will probably show a message stating that it's locked. Right after a valid code is typed in, the mobile phone will display "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

Mobile handset providers have economic incentives both to strengthen SIM lock security (which placates service companies and allows exclusivity deals) as well as to weaken it (broadening a mobile's allure to users that may not be interested in the service provider that offers it). In addition, making it too hard to unlock a mobile might make it less attractive to network service providers with a legal duty to provide unlock codes for some devices or in selected countries.

Unlocking Services:

A certain amount of businesses provide a network smartphone unlocking service . This service requires all those whom want to unlock a mobile to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also need the country and network the phone is locked to, sometimes sent via email or submitted on their web site. The organization then will supply (in return for a fee) a unlock code for the phone.
