Minecraft film'set to hit silver screen'

28 February 2014

The block-building game Minecraft, which is hugely popular, could soon be made into a movie.

Markus Persson, Minecraft creator has revealed this week that Warner Brothers was in conversation with him regarding the Minecraft project.

Persson said he had disclosed the information to stop someone else trying to leak information about it.

Movie news site Deadline revealed that one of the producers of the recent Lego Movie is handling the project.

Warner was planning to make the "live action" version of the game into a film according to Deadline.

The film's production is in a very infancy stage since Warner only recently acquired the rights to make use of Minecraft's iconic blocks, characters and monsters. my cms

This news comes just two months after Mojang, Minecraft creator, has shut down a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to create a film inspired by the game.

Hollywood has a history of remaking top-selling games for film. Many projects do not get to the production stage.

For instance, a film set in the science-fictional Halo universe has been in development for the past nine years, but filming has not yet to begin despite multiple scripts being written.

Similar films based on Bioshock and Gears of War have been discussed, but there is no film that has begun filming.

One game that is being turned into a film is World of Warcraft, filming began in January of this year, with British director Duncan Jones in charge. The film is scheduled to be released in early 2016.
