Minecraft film 'set to hit silver screen'

28 February 2014

A film adaptation of the hugely popular block-building game Minecraft is possible soon.

Markus Persson, Minecraft creator, revealed this week that Warner Brothers was in conversation with him about the project.

Persson claimed he released the news to stop another person trying to leak information about the deal.

Movie news site Deadline reported on Tuesday that one of the producers of Lego Movie was handling the project.

Deadline reports that Warner had plans to make a film of a "live action" version. Email

The film is still in an early stage of development, as Warner recently acquired the rights to Minecraft's iconic blocks and characters.

The news comes less than two weeks after Minecraft creator Mojang took action to shut down a Kickstarter project seeking to raise funds for a film based on the game.

Film adaptations of best-selling games have a rocky history in Hollywood and many projects never get beyond the planning stage.

A movie based on the science-fictional Halo universe was in development for nine year, but filming is still not starting despite several scripts being created.

Similarly films based on Bioshock, Gears of War and Metal Gear Solid Work have all been talked about but none has yet to start shooting.

World of Warcraft is a game that is being made into a movie. Filming began in January with Duncan Jones, a British director. The film will be released in early 2016.
